Mackays announce ‘Name the Penguin’ competition for Maggie’s Penguin Parade

As part of the upcoming parade, Arbroath-based marmalade and jam producer Mackays are inviting people to take part in a competition to name their giant penguin sculpture.

The lucky winner will receive a year’s worth of marmalade and £100 to spend in the Mackays factory shop or online store.

Seville, Marmabeak, Tango and Paddington are examples of some of the marmalade inspired names already entered on Mackays Facebook page.

The penguin, one of 80 which will form the Maggie’s Penguin Parade, is being transformed by Borders-based artist Debbie Ryan.

Debbie specialises in making mosaic sculptures.  She creates large scale mosaic sculptures and murals, often collaborating with other artists, community organisations or schools.

Debbie will be using her artistic flair to bring to life the theme of marmalade on the penguin statue.

“When I was researching Dundee’s history, I came across the story of marmalade that was made from a cargo of oranges from a ship that had broken down in Dundee’s port,” said Debbie.

“I love the idea that people could have a piece of Dundee in their kitchen, no matter where they live, and I like to think of the marmalade design as a mosaic memento to Dundee History.”

Maggie’s Penguin Parade’s education coordinator Neil Cooney visited Mackays in his penguin costume on Tuesday 24th to launch the competition.  Neil was allowed to stir the traditionally made marmalade, which is still made to the original Dundee marmalade recipe.

Mackays workers and the penguin had lots of fun on the day by having their very own parade on the factory floor.  Neil was also put to work on the production line stacking jars – not an easy task with flippers!

The competition will feature on Mackays Facebook page until Friday 11th of May, terms and conditions can be found below.

The winning suggestion will be chosen by Artist Debbie Ryan and Mackays Managing Director, Martin Grant.
